Juicy J on Gangsta Boo’s death
Juicy J on Gangsta Boo’s death
Juicy J has shared a regretful revelation about Gangsta Boo's passing, expressing his sorrow for the tragic situation. During an interview on Sway in the Morning, the Three 6 Mafia member disclosed that he had a heartfelt conversation with his former groupmate a few months before her unexpected death.
Juicy J noted that on that particular day, he couldn't ignore the evident signs of Boo's drug use and felt deeply concerned for her well-being. When they bid farewell after their conversation, he had an unsettling intuition that it might be the last time they would see each other.
He recalled, "It really affected me, you know? I received a text that morning from [La] Chat, simply stating, 'Boo is no longer with us.' It left a lasting impact on me."
"The last time I saw Gangsta Boo was a few months before her passing. We had discussions about various topics—life, her mother's passing. We embraced and reminisced about the old days," Juicy J continued.
He went on, "I noticed something about her at that moment. She was using cocaine at the time and was visibly high. I could recognize the telltale signs of cocaine use—sniffing and such."
"I won't deny it, it's a harsh reality—it's frightening, but it's the truth. When she walked away, there was this feeling inside me, like, 'She's not going to make it.'"
"I can't explain where that feeling came from, but I couldn't help but think, 'Are you still using cocaine?' because I knew she had been using it for a long time," he added.
He further expressed his regret, saying, "I wanted to say something to her, to have a conversation about it. In the past, I would take her aside and say, 'Boo, put that stuff away. We have work to do.'"
"But I hadn't seen Boo in a while, and she was an adult, so I didn't want to intrude in her personal life... I wish I had said something. It's heartbreaking," Juicy J lamented.
When questioned about what he would have said to Boo in that moment, Juicy J expressed, "I would have discreetly pulled her aside, given her my number, and said, 'Look, if you ever need help or someone to talk to, I see you're still dealing with cocaine; let's discuss it, let's try to get you some assistance.'"
He reflected on his past experiences, saying, "I remember in the past going over to Lord Infamous' house and picking him up. I would attempt to take them to rehab—even though I was heavily intoxicated with alcohol at the time! I was pretty drunk, but I would still insist, 'No, we need to break free from this cocaine, we need to put an end to this. It's causing chaos within the group, tearing things apart.'"
He added, "I was trying to keep everyone together and provide support, but things were pretty wild, man. Three 6 Mafia was a pretty rowdy group."
Gangsta Boo, whose real name was Lola Chantrelle Mitchell, passed away on January 1, 2023, at the age of 43. She was found unresponsive at her mother's residence in Memphis and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her death was determined to be an accidental overdose, according to an autopsy report released several months later. The report indicated that she had overdosed on fentanyl, cocaine, and ethanol (alcohol).
Despite their close collaboration, neither Juicy J nor his fellow Three 6 Mafia member DJ Paul attended Gangsta Boo's funeral. Unfortunately, a video tribute from Juicy J was also hindered by technical difficulties.
In his subdued video tribute, Juicy J expressed, "Rest in peace to the Queen of Memphis, Lola Mitchell, also known as Gangsta Boo. My prayers go out to her family, friends, and fans. We've lost an exceptional talent. I'm at a loss for words, making this video was tough for me. I miss Gangsta Boo's smile. Just two months ago, Gangsta Boo and I had a conversation."
He went on to share, "We performed together, and we had a wonderful conversation. We reminisced about the past, talked about family, friends, and music. Rest in peace, we've lost the Queen of Memphis. Her memory will never fade, and we'll keep her name alive. We'll continue to honor her through her music. Sending prayers up."
It's worth noting that a posthumous album by Gangsta Boo is reportedly in the works, and it's expected to feature collaborations with artists like Latto, Run The Jewels, La Chat, Skepta, Crunchy Black, and others.
